Pet insurance is a low-cost way to ensure that the costs of care are not a stumbling block if your pet needs help, especially for a catastrophic illness (urethral obstruction in cats; parvo or intestinal foreign body surgery in dogs). Many providers even have "wellness riders," that help defray the cost of valuable "well patient" services with your primary veterinarian, such as dental care or routine bloodwork. Pet insurance companies have long understood what our own health insurance companies are just figuring out - an ounce of prevention is better, and a whole lot cheaper, than a pound of cure!
